Ear Gauges

Ear piercing has been a piece of the human culture since the time of hunter gatherers. Ear piercing may pertain to a single hole in the ears but there are 8 other locations to pierce the ears. The size of the hole in the ear may also be expanded in the new technology of ear gauging. The helix of the ear mistakenly called cartilage is a common piercing area besides the lobe.

The method of cartilage piercing is more complicated and painful than piercing ear lobes. Earrings are made from various materials such as plastic, wood, glass, and stone which are cheap while others are made of gold, platinum, silver and other precious products.

Earrings have been tracked in ancient Persia. Pictures on walls depicting soldiers wearing earrings were first seen. In the Dark ages, popularity of earrings declined because of poverty. It resurfaced during the rise of the Roman Empire when high-end fashion called for wearing of earrings. Ear jewelry was lost again in the Middle Ages when elaborate hairstyles and fashionable dresses appeared. In 1850’s earring lost their fame again and religions and social concerns deemed wearing of earrings as excessive and vain. Clip-on earrings also became in fashion, causing piercings to be lost again in the 20’s. Earrings were back in the sixties and seventies.

Another fashion in wearing ear jewelry is ear gauging. This pertains to stretching the ears permanently over a loop, revealing a visible hole in the earlobe. The origin of ear gauges is more recent and younger generations are the ones making the most out of this new technology. Ear gauging can be made in small scales, the size less of a pencil’s diameter. Moderately scaled ear gauging can barely fit a thumb through the lobe’s hole while exaggerated gauges can fit soda cans and other bigger objects.
